"The first Baptist sermon in Van Buren township was preached at the house of Thomas Cartwright...but the date of that meeting was veiled in uncertainty. Meetings were held from time to time after that, and the result was the organization of a Baptist church, which now has a fine brick building on East Mill street in the town of Summitville."

SUMMITVILLE UNITED METHODIST
Building Built: 1900
Congregation Founded: 1867
Previous Residing Congregations:
From a letter by Mary Blose on the early history of the Summitville Methodist Church. Date is unkown. "In the Spring of 1867 Summitville had but one house-and that was a log house-with a store in the backroom...Mr. Estes said that if five Methodists could be found in the community that he would make an effort to organize a class."
Classes were held in different locations until 1888 when a lot of land on North Main Street was donated by a man named Aaron Williams. A one room, one story brick bulding was then erected in 1900. The total cost was less thatn $6,900.
The windows were all leaded art glass, some being memorials to deceased members, and others being gifts of the G.A.R, I.O.O.F, L.O.R.K., K. of P., and Sunday School, Epworth League, the choir and the Ladies Missionary Society.
