A Christian church was organized in Alexandria in 1852. By 1853 a small house of worship was built and lasted until 1863. The building was deemed unsafe and so abandonded. "In 1875, the Alexandria church was reorganized by Rev. William McKensey and most of the former members came back. Since then the society has prospered and now owns a neat and substantial frame house of worship at the corner of Berry and West streets."

The wealthy New York lady mentioned above was actually Clara Graff of Pennsylvania. The blue stained glass windows on the outside of the church depict Jesus' ascension.
