"As early as 1824 the few Methodists living in the vicinity of Perkinsville organized a class... For some time the little congregation held services in a log school house...and about 1848 a brick house of worship was erected. It continued to be the home of the congregation until 1888, when it was replaced by a larger and more pretentious edifice. This was the first church organizartion in jackson townhship." (1)
"In 1888 the old brick walls of the church were pulled down by horses and a new larger brick building was built. Part of the brick from the old church was built into this new church. The rest of the brick needed was baked on the Nellie Shell Farm just north of Perkinsville. On February 17th, 1889, the new church building was dedicated." (2)

As far back as 1837, Catholic clergymen were traveling to Anderson to hold masses in a local log cabin/tavern (souteast corner of Central Ave. & 9th). Masses were first held for canal workers of Irish-Catholic descent who were involved with the building of the Central Canal through Andersontown.
In 1858 a foundation was layed for the first church building on what is now the current site, the northeast corner of 11th & Fletcher. It was not completed until 1864.
With a growing conregation a second building was built in 1875 near the first building on the southeast corner of 11th & Fletcher. As the congregation continued to grow the first building built in 1858 was demolished and a new building (which is the current one) was built and dedicated on Oct. 6th 1895. The cost was about $45,000 and has a seating capacity for 800 people.

The first Whetstone Church was built and dedicated in 1874. It was non-denominational and located in the corner of the Whetstone cemetery. The land was given by Peter Whetstone. Due to repairs and a growing congregation, the first church was torn down and a new one was built in 1915.
With a need for more and better educational facilities, a new brick church was erected across the road in 1938. On Sunday, July 24, 1938 a ground breaking service was held for the current buiding. It was dedicated on February 26, 1939.
Since then there have been several repairs and times of remodelling. In 1966 a Christian Education Unit was built. In 1975 the sanctuary was remodeled. In 1989 an enclosed entry was added and in 1994 a gym was constructed.

CENTRAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Building Built: 1900
Congregation Founded: 1840

The current building, which is the second, was completed in December of 1900. The stained glass located in the sanctuary is original to the building and the design. The artist is unknown, but the artictects of both the glass and woodwork were European artisans. Most of the glasswork is decorative milk-glass from the Victorian age which complement the Moroccan style architecture of the building. Fun fact: In the 1970s the windows were temporarily removed so that a soild storm glass could be installed to provide protection. In the process, a few dark purple pieces broke. They could not be replaced because the purple dye came from the ink of an endangered squid. These pieces are easily identified today because they were replaced with a deep crimson.

CHURCH OF THE BRETHEREN
Building Built: 1974
Congregation Founded: 1890s
Previous Residing Congregations: None
The church began as a mission church by Ella Raffensberger along with the help of the Lower Fall Creek Church in the 1890s. The original buliding was destroyed by fire so in 1974 the current building was built.
There are two sets of stained glass in the current building. The first set is from the original building built around the 1930s. In 1972 a fire destroyed the building and all the lead in the stained glass melted. Pieces of the stained glass were recovered and three of the windows were reconstructed and placed in the new building. These three windows mostly depict Christian symbolism including the Bretheren logo. It has been said that during the fire when the face of Jesus fell onto the floor it did not break. It is possible that they then used his face in the new stained glass windows but no one is certain. The newer stained glass windows are much more pictorial.
